Emily loves reading comics, but she struggled to find characters that she could relate to. So her dad Dan decided to write his own comic book. It’s called Department Of Ability, and features a cast of superheroes whose impairments are their greatest superpower.

“I designed my comic book for all kids, because they will be responsible for a future in which people are not discriminated against” – Dan White, whose daughter Emily has spina bifida

In the photo above you can see Emily attending a comics workshop for disabled children, organised by Scope as part of National Storytelling Week. Sharing and writing stories is a magical experience for any child – a chance to see that anything is possible.

Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we'll be here.
